1956 was a year of intense scrutiny. As Eve wrote, “there was an overwhelming amount of publicity about her.” Yet Marilyn understood how to channel attention with intelligence and humour.

Moments before stepping out, dressed in a black velvet gown with “straps the width of spaghetti strips,” she caught Eve’s eye in the mirror and said:

“Just watch me.”

This photograph is that quiet pause — Marilyn watching, waiting, gathering herself.

Because moments later: Halfway through the conference, Marilyn leaned forward and deliberately snapped one of those “thinner-than-thin straps.”
