EXPO Chicago
13 - 16 April 2023 Marcel Pinas describes the cultural awareness from his past as Preserve The Culture (Kibri a Kulturu): ’My art is about experiences from the past. It deals with the demise of the N’dyuka culture in Surinam caused by war and economic strife. In my work I project that situation, paying attention to the protection of cultures in general’. Marcel Pinas is a strong advocate of his native marron community from the Surinam jungle in South America. The cultural practices are strongly linked to the community’s roots on the African continent, but also astonishingly developed a unique syllabic alphabet ‘Afaka’. Pinas uses these Afaka symbols extensively throughout his art practice, whether in painting, drawing, installation or sculptures. Through education and community projects he not only creates awareness for his own N’dyuka community but also highlights the value of cultural diversity and the importance of preserving marginalized cultures world wide. “Australian Aboriginal Art clearly bridges the gap between the Abstract and the Figurative arts and between the traditional and the present.” David Smith As on the Australian continent where art was one of the first tools the indigenous communities found to create awareness to their cultural identity and to rebuild communities and traditions that were lost after decades of Western colonial activities. Art can be a powerful tool indeed. SmithDavidson Gallery presents work from the most revered Australian Indigenous artists at EXPO Chicago, which also includes recent paintings by Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, the current powerhouse of Australian Aboriginal Art and the pre-eminent member of the Pintupi Nine, the remarkable final group of Indigenous people ever to walk out of the Australian desert and to be introduced to Western society as late as 1984.
