About the work - Malcolm X, Beyond the Headlines:
In 1960, Life magazine assigned Eve to photograph Malcolm X — a man then cast by much of the media as “the most dangerous man in America.”
But Eve saw something else.
At their first meeting, she mistakenly called a dish “sweet potato pie.”
Malcolm corrected her: “It’s made with beans. White beans.”
— emphasising the word “White” with such venom she briefly wondered if he meant to unsettle her.
Then his eyes lit up. He laughed.
It was a moment of humour and self-awareness
—the start of a trust that would shape their time together.
