Overview
Koelnmesse

Art Cologne is the world's oldest and one of the most important fairs for modern and contemporary art. Every year, renowned galleries, artists, collectors and art lovers meet in Cologne to discover high-calibre paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations and digital artworks. As an international art fair, Art Cologne sets standards in the art market and offers a unique platform for dialogue between artists and investors.

This Fall, SmithDavidson Gallery returns to Cologne with an curated selection that bridges cultures, histories, and contemporary visions,  featuring First Nations Australian artists alongside renowned Chinese artist Zhuang Hong Yi.

The selection reflects a commitment to amplifying diverse artistic voices and exploring how local traditions resonate within global contexts. The First Nations Australian works embody deep connections to land, ancestry, and storytelling, offering perspectives rooted in one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures. Their visual languages, rich in symbolism, rhythm, and memory, speak powerfully to contemporary conversations about identity, belonging, and sustainability.

In dialogue, the works of Zhuang Hong Yi bring a distinct fusion of Eastern aesthetics and Western abstraction. His signature floral sculptures and color-shifting paintings transform traditional Chinese materials and techniques into meditations on change, perception, and cultural hybridity.

Together, these artists create a cross-cultural conversation, one that honors heritage while engaging with the evolving global art landscape. Through this presentation, the gallery seeks to highlight art’s ability to transcend geography and language, revealing shared human experiences through form, texture, and color.
