SmithDavidson Gallery is pleased to announce a new collaboration with DOEN Rotterdam. This partnership kicks off with a solo exhibition by Dutch artist Marie Cécile Thijs. Known for her timeless and thoughtful photography, Thijs presents a selection of works that reflect her unique view on stillness and imagination.
SmithDavidson Gallery and DOEN proudly present a solo exhibition by Dutch artist Marie Cécile Thijs, marking the beginning of a new creative collaboration between the two partners. The exhibition opens on Thursday, July 3rd, at DOEN, Avenue Concordia 30, Rotterdam.
Known for her distinctive photographic style, Marie Cécile Thijs creates still lifes and portraits that blur the boundaries between classical influence and contemporary expression. Her compositions often feature flowers, vases, birds, and food, rendered in rich chiaroscuro and drawing inspiration from 17th-century Dutch painting.
This exhibition highlights works from her Flowers, Vases & Birds series, where Thijs uses authentic Delftware and natural elements to construct surreal, contemplative scenes. Her ability to capture stillness and subtle transformation gives everyday objects a new and often surprising presence.
Marie Cécile Thijs was named Artist of the Year 2024 by the Dutch Foundation Kunstweek. Her work is part of collections at institutions such as the Rijksmuseum, Museum Rotterdam, and the Museum of Photographic Arts San Diego.
This exhibition not only showcases her acclaimed work but also celebrates the start of a long-term partnership between SmithDavidson Gallery and DOEN, a design brand focused on thoughtful renovation and contemporary interior culture.
