Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s vivid wildflower paintings echo a specific stage in the life cycle of the wild yam, a plant central to her cultural and artistic identity. Her middle name, Kame, is derived from the Yam Dreaming site at Alhalkere, grounding her work in deep ancestral knowledge and connection to Country. Though the yam motif is not always visually apparent, it permeates all of Emily's work. Beneath the layers of dots, strokes, and vibrant colour lies the enduring presence of the yam story—a Dreaming narrative that informs her entire artistic practice.
In this particular 'wildflower' painting, Emily captures the fleeting moment when the pencil yam emerges above ground, displaying its bright foliage and delicate orange and pink flowers. Yet, the true sustenance of the plant lies hidden below the earth in its swollen roots and pod-like offshoots. These underground treasures are notoriously difficult to find due to the yam’s erratic and unpredictable growth patterns. Traditionally, their harvest requires intimate ecological knowledge and great physical effort across vast terrain, reflecting the plant’s sacred and practical significance.
Emily’s painting, then, is more than a celebration of natural beauty—it is an encoded landscape, a spiritual map, and a testament to cultural endurance.
Emily Kngwarreye’s work is a profound expression of Aboriginal spirituality and the Dreaming—the timeless creation stories that inform and sustain her community's way of life. Her art, at once spontaneous and deeply contemplated, is celebrated for its raw strength, lyrical beauty, and spiritual resonance.
Please note that all First Nations Art is created from a so called ‘Birds Eye’ view. This means that the paintings can be hung either horizontally as well as vertically.
