SmithDavidson Gallery presents ‘Faces in Color’, a new online exhibition featuring works by Jordy Kerwick, Matthijs Scholten, Gavin Rain, and Hanne Arends. This exhibition showcases the diverse ways in which artists use the endless possibilities of color, working figuratively and primarily portraying faces.
Each artist engages with color across distinct mediums and techniques. Jordy Kerwick is known for his vibrant, eclectic still-life paintings, in which he combines animalistic figures, mythical elements, and ancient iconography. Matthijs Scholten’s visual language consists of bold and surreal explosions of color, blending abstract forms and striking eyes. Through textures and shapes, Hanne Arends engages with the materiality of color in her sculptural forms that resemble human faces and reflect its own unique character. Contrasting the technical spontaneity of these artists, Gavin Rain works with color as a precise system through mathematical pointillism, layering dots into constructed portraits that only emerge at a distance.
Together, they show that color is not merely decorative, but fundamental, carrying and actively shaping meanings, emotions, and, above all, identities. ‘Faces in Color’ highlights the power of color as both a universal visual language and an individual mode of expression.
Faces in Color is on view until September 14.
