Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri’s ‘Maruwa’ now on view at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

The painting Maruwa by Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, from the private collection of the SmithDavidson Gallery, is currently featured in the exhibition Connection: Land, Water, Sky – Art & Music from Indigenous Australians at The Lume at the Newfields Museum in Indianapolis.

Known for his work within the Western Desert art movement, Tjapaltjarri’s Maruwa reflects the artist’s deep cultural connection to land and ancestral stories through intricate patterns and repetition.

The exhibition, Connection, brings together over 500 digital and physical artworks by more than 100 Indigenous Australian artists. Visitors can explore themes of land, identity, and tradition, accompanied by a specially curated soundscape featuring Indigenous music. As the first experience of its kind in the U.S., the immersive format offers a layered perspective on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture.

Connection: Land, Water, Sky – Art & Music from Indigenous Australians is on view at The Lume at Newfields through spring 2026.
