Marie Cecile Thijs

Artist in the Spotlight

SmithDavidson Gallery highlights the work of Marie Cecile Thijs, a Dutch photographer internationally acclaimed for her surreal and meticulously staged images. Her practice is defined by a refined balance between reality and imagination, where contrasts of light and dark create compositions in which the unusual appears entirely natural. Through still lifes and portraits, Thijs constructs a distinctive visual language that merges abstract and figurative elements, resulting in images that feel both timeless and quietly enigmatic.

Marie Cecile Thijs describes her work as showing “an illusion of a parellel world.” She captures short, passing moments and turns them into carefully arranged images. Even though her photos are planned in detail, they still feel natural, as if the subjects fit perfectly in their surroundings. By slightly changing reality, she highlights the unusual and beautiful parts of everyday life, encouraging viewers to look more closely and reflect.
