Alf Bärbel Wit Peters

A New Intuitive Voice at SmithDavidson Gallery

SmithDavidson Gallery is pleased to welcome Dutch artist Alf Bärbel Wit to its roster, presenting his work for the first time at the KunstRAI Amsterdam. Working entirely intuitively, Alf creates abstract paintings and drawings that unfold without a preconceived plan. Guided by emotion, rhythm, and movement, his compositions develop organically, each line leading to the next. The result is a layered visual language in which structure and freedom coexist, balancing playful openness with a striking sense of focus and depth.

The rhythm of his lines and brushstrokes invites a meditative viewing experience, drawing the eye across the surface in a continuous flow. While echoes of artists such as Kandinsky, Miró, Haring, and Appel can be felt, his practice remains firmly rooted in intuition rather than theory, centered on feeling rather than explanation.

Alongside his autonomous work, Alf has collaborated with a range of cultural and commercial partners, including Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, Moooi, and WeTransfer. His work has been exhibited internationally, featured at the Kröller-Müller Museum, and is held in private collections across Europe and the United States.

"Alf does not paint what he sees, but what he feels. His work emerges intuitively, without a filter. Whereas the Cobra painters sought the unconscious and the inner child, Alf seems to tap into that source effortlessly. His paintings form a kaleidoscope of emotions, in which structure and chaos converge. Free from conventions, uninfluenced by any traditional aesthetics. pure, direct and uninhibited.” — Gallery owner David Smith.
