Cathalijn Wouters

Artist in the Spotlight

SmithDavidson Gallery is pleased to highlight the work of Dutch artist Cathalijn Wouters, whose paintings explore themes of femininity, memory, and the relationship between people and nature. Working from her studio in Amsterdam, Wouters creates carefully composed scenes that combine observation and imagination, often featuring women, flowers, animals, and intimate interiors.

Nature plays a central role throughout her practice. Flowers, plants, and animals are more than visual elements; they help shape the emotional atmosphere of each work. Through soft colour palettes and layered compositions, Wouters creates paintings that feel both familiar and dreamlike, inviting viewers into moments of reflection and connection.

From the Very Beginning (2020), Oil on canvas in dual tone frame, 210 x 180 cm / 82.7 x 70.9 inch.

Rather than offering fixed narratives, Wouters leaves space for personal interpretation. Her works draw on everyday experiences, emotions, and memories, encouraging viewers to engage with the paintings through their own associations and perspectives.

Recently featured in an article by Artnet, Wouters reflects on her artistic journey, sources of inspiration, and the themes that continue to shape her practice. The article offers further insight into the distinctive visual language behind her work and her growing international presence.

Still Looking (2022), Ink on paper in perspex frame, 63 x 48 cm / 24.8 x 18.9 inch.
