“I just grab a brush and start somewhere. Then I let it grow. Every line inspires the next.” - Alf Bärbel Wit Peters
SmithDavidson Gallery is pleased to welcome Dutch artist Alf Bärbel Wit Peters to its roster. Working entirely intuitively, Alf creates abstract paintings and drawings that unfold without a preconceived plan. Each composition begins with a single gesture, a line, a mark, a movement, from which the work develops organically. Guided by emotion, rhythm, and an almost musical sense of timing, his visual language emerges through a continuous process of response and discovery. A self-taught artist, Alf has been drawing since early childhood, driven by an innate fascination with line and form. His practice is rooted in immediacy: “I just start,” he explains, allowing each line to inspire the next. This intuitive approach results in densely layered compositions in which structure and spontaneity coexist. His works balance playful openness with a remarkable sense of focus and depth, inviting viewers into intricate worlds that feel at once expansive and intimate. The rhythmic quality of Alf’s work emerges through cadence, repetition, and variation. Lines pulse, intersect, and expand across the surface, guiding the viewer’s gaze in a fluid, almost meditative flow. This sense of movement creates an immersive viewing experience, encouraging slow looking and sustained attention. While echoes of artists such as Kandinsky, Miró, Haring, and Appel can be perceived, Alf’s practice resists direct comparison. Rather than engaging with theoretical frameworks or conceptual narratives, his work is grounded in intuition, curiosity, and the act of making. It is less about interpretation and more about experience, about entering the rhythm of the work and following its internal logic.Alongside his autonomous practice, Alf has developed a dynamic body of collaborative projects that extend his visual language into new contexts. He has created a large-scale mural for Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, designed a carpet collection for Moooi, and led workshops for institutions such as WeTransfer and the Maastricht Academy of Arts. His work has also been featured at the Kröller-Müller Museum and in international publications including Design Milk and Dezeen.Alf Bärbel Wit’s work ultimately proposes a way of seeing that is rooted in openness and presence. His drawings and paintings do not dictate meaning but invite it, offering viewers the space to wander, to reflect, and to experience the quiet intensity of line, rhythm, and imagination. -
A word from gallery owner David Smith
"Alf does not paint what he sees, but what he feels. His work emerges intuitively, without a filter. Whereas the Cobra painters sought the unconscious and the inner child, Alf seems to tap into that source effortlessly. His paintings form a kaleidoscope of emotions, in which structure and chaos converge. Free from conventions, uninfluenced by any traditional aesthetics. pure, direct and uninhibited.”
